George Haley has a nice letter to the Dowagiac Daily news, looking back at the last year concerning the Ambulance issues. On a side note, my letter urging people in areas covered by CEMS/PRIDE to seek out GPS proof they are really covered appears in the HP, but not the Dowagiac News. Guess that would be bad press if everyone realized 5 townships and the city were undercovered.
The new Keeler board (Well it still has the old timers of Millhouse and Davis, but with the new supervisor True and two new trustees of Fleischauer and Landis) had a very interesting meeting. I'm just going to hit the highlights and will post a better summary after uploading the video. Also ABC 57 was there filming - I have to say I'm impressed with the local news coverage. I wish I could get their channel but Dish Network won't let me!
ABC 57 has more coverage of the Sister Lakes Ambulance change. They talk to a local woman who says she would rather risk being driven to a hospital personally than rely on waiting around for Pride Care to show up. Thank you Nicole Ross for speaking out so passionately.
ABC 57 ran a good story from Sister Lakes about the closing of Sister Lakes Ambulance. Linda and Adam both gave heartfelt and positive information about SLFD EMS. I will note that the Pride Care ambulance they picture in the story is Parked at Quality Marathon on M140 - in Berrien County.
On Dec 1 Sister Lakes Ambulance will no longer be covering Silver Creek. I'd like to thank all of the staff at SLFD and SL EMS for their years of work and dedication to the area.
There was letter to the editor in the Dowagiac Daily News from Tom Gear, concerning the Ambulance millage in Silver Creek. He makes the point that the millage being asked for is replacing the ambulance millage that expired, that 60% of people polled wanted to keep Sister Lakes Ambulance and that the long service of Sister Lakes has been people helping their fellow residents, not a for profit venture like the so called "free" service Coloma is offering.
Silver Creek township has again extended the Sister Lakes EMS contract until November. Silver Creek has already polled the citizens asking their input and the clear majority want to stay with Sister lakes. However it seems that Silver Creek is still waiting to see what ultimately happens with Keeler instead of Silver Creek listening to citizens and making their own decisions.
The Dowagiac Daily News has the other side of the story. I was surprised and upset that the Dowagiac Daily had only spoken with the current Keeler board for the Friday article. But as they've published a story about each side over two days it did end up being a good representation of both sides of the issues. This time they spoke with the Sister Lakes Fire Department and EMS.
I just got back from the Relay for Life being held at the Dowagiac Union HS Track. It's still ongoing as people will be walking all night long. Many local businesses and hundreds if not thousands of local supporters have done wonders. Sister Lakes Elementary represented the entire Dowagiac Union School system. Even understaffed the SL Elementary tent looked great and they were quite busy. Out of the entire school district it was people from Sister Lakes Elementary helping out for the official representation. Way to go!
