It was brought to my attention that I was attacked by name on Facebook in context of township issues. This was awhile ago, it was during a long family medical crisis - 2 months hanging around a hospital in Cleveland is not a vacation - and I did mostly ignore everything else, so I'm just seeing this. I believe all of the information I've posted against either our elected officials or candidates, or contracted services has been factually based. I mostly shrug off this personal attack against me.
I'm working on a project and was wondering if anyone has seen any place advertising 'pay by phone' in the area. NFC, or Android Beam, allows you to pay for things by just tapping your cell phone against a payment spot. I know phone payments are common in other countries and am wondering if there has been any uptake in Southwest Michigan, or even Chicago for that matter. Trying to get a feel if it's a fad, up-and-coming tech, or a Meh sort of tech. I noticed the usage was a minor point made in the last Fringe.
The last few meetings of the school board made me wonder why Dowagiac School system needs a multi-million dollar bond to start actually using technology. I'm hoping others share my views so I'm posting this letter I sent to the board here.
The Monday evening meeting of the Dowagiac School board decided to pursue a 2.2 mil bond, for 18 million, to build a new High School connected to the existing Middle School. All 4 elementary schools would stay open as they are. The school board had no decision on what to do with the existing school, and they would continue to use the existing football field.
The annual Keeler township budget meeting is Saturday March 31, 8am at the township hall. This is the chance for citizens to request things be added to the budget or get clarifications for any budget items. I know I'll be asking the board to have a taped PA system like Silver Creek has. A physical copy of all meetings, along with a PA system so people can hear the meetings, would be a nice addition. If anyone can't make the meeting but wants something brought up just drop me an email in the contact form and I'll be happy to pass things along.
At the March 28th school board meeting the first item on the agenda was discussing bids for the Wolverine building. The board said there were two bids tied for high bid. The board discussed the merits of the two bidders, one wanted to turn the building into professional commercial space for lawyers and accountants. The other wanted to make an art studio. The board decided to accept the offer from the art studio proposal as it ties into the Dowagiac community best. Not a single mention of the amounts. No one from the public asked the amount, I fault myself here.
There was a packed schoolboard meeting today. The Dowagiac News says over 50 people and I know there were not enough chairs for everyone to sit during the hour and a half meeting. The board discussed the reasoning for a non-renewal motion saying it was a simple procedure suggested by their law firm and that they were not trying to fire anyone. Past and present administrators, along with a strong supporting community, brought up many problems with the school board's behavior.
The Dowagiac union school board is trying to pull a fast one. This Monday they announced a special meeting this Wed, Mar 28th, noon at the Dowagiac City Hall. One item on the agenda is "Approval of Resolution for Non-Renewal of Administrative Contracts". This means the superintendent is asking the board to vote to get rid of the contracts of the principals of all Dowagiac Schools.
