The Dowagiac School board has publically disclosed their future plans of closing Sister Lakes Elementary. This Tuesday is a perfect example of just one reason why it's good for the community to have a local elementary school - Grandparent's day. This allows the grandparents to easily visit the school and see what the children are doing. There are a surprising number of local grandparents who won't have to travel far to attend.
I pick up my niece from school at least once a week and it's normal to see many people that live in the area also picking up their children. Parents, Grandparents, Relatives, local business owners, etc. Having the children in Dowagiac would be a hurdle for many. Further no one would want their kindergardener riding the bus at least an hour each way. I know not having a local elementary would be a major factor in families with young children deciding to move to the area. Remember Sister Lakes gives a significant portion of the Dowagiac Union Tax base. Remember that when the Dowagiac School board asks an increase in taxes to expand schools in Dowagiac while closing Sister Lakes Elementary.

Closing Sister Lakes Elementary School
Sister Lakes is/was a close-knit community. I always thought we should have had our own high school as well. Having attended Sister Lakes Elementary, going to Dowagiac for Junior High and High School was not a pleasant experience for me. Not to knock Dowagiac, but the cultures are very different from each other. I would suggest looking into starting a Charter School at Sister Lakes. This could be K_4, K-6 or K-12. With a Charter school the money follows the students, parents would have an option of where to send their kids to school. Also parents have more of a say in the education of their children. The Charter can focus on what the parents want for their kids.
